Obituary

Berna Dean Slattery was born June 2, 1929, at Verdigre, Nebraska, a daughter of Rolley Herman and Agnes Irman (Boelter) Miller, and passed from this life Monday, April 8, 2024, at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 6 days.

She was baptized on July 7, 1929, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Venus, Nebraska, and was confirmed on January 23, 1944, at Christ Lutheran Church, O'Neill, Nebraska.

On March 9, 1952, Berna was united in marriage to Earl Raymond Slattery at the Lutheran parsonage, O'Neill, Nebraska, and to this union four children were born.

Berna's husband was a career military man and the family lived in Germany, South America, Africa, and Okinawa before Earl retired from the United States Army. After Earl's retirement, they made their home in Dixon before moving back to O'Neill, Nebraska in 1984, and after Earl's passing, Berna moved back to Dixon in September of 1992.

During her working life, Berna worked for the Army quartermaster in Africa, Buster Brown Shoe Company, Dixon, worked with the Head Start program in O'Neill, Nebraska, and served as a school health nurse aide at Fort Leonard Wood Schools. Berna was also active in many organizations including being the den mother for the Boy Scouts and Brownie leader for Girl Scouts while living in Africa, an Auxiliary member of the Retired Officers Association, and lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #93, O'Neill, Nebraska, and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #4238, Dixon, Missouri.

Those left to mourn the passing of Berna include: two daughters, Julie Wilson (Sammy) of Dixon, and Debbie Slattery of Montreal; three grandchildren, Michael Rollins (Dee), Dirk Wilson, and Crystal Wilson; one great-grandson, Wesley Wilson; one brother, Glen of Nebraska; nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Berna was preceded in death by her father Rolley in 1974; her mother, Agnes in 1982; one daughter, Dianna Rollins on June 9, 2017; one son Bruce Slattery; brothers, Freddie Miller, and one infant brother; and sisters, Ruth Jenson, Beulah Kruse, and three infant sisters.

Berna will be laid to rest next to her husband, Earl, in O'Neill, Nebraska.

Arrangements were under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon.
