Obituary

Bob Gene Whiteside, of Vienna, was born on January 8, 1942, at West Frankfort, Illinois, the only son of Homer Lee and Bess (Lewis) Whiteside, and departed this life, peacefully in his sleep, on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at his residence. He had attained the age of 77 years, 6 months, and 15 days.

Bob was united in marriage on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1974, at Marion, Illinois, to the former Judith Ann (Bottom) Wilkins.

On July 30, 1959, at Chicago, Illinois, Bob entered into active federal service in the Navy of the United States and served until January 18, 1963, when he was honorably discharged to inactive duty from his last active duty assignment on the USS INGRAHAM (DD 694) at the rank of SN (E-3). A man of excellent character, Bob's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimonial of honest and faithful service to his country.

In addition to his years of service in the United States Navy, Bob was employed by the Missouri Department of Corrections, Jefferson City, as a Correctional Officer, for twenty years prior to his retirement. He was a man that was diligent in caring for his family and providing for their needs. Bob's wife, Judy, stated that he had really been happy since getting new hearing aids and being able to hear the birds and crickets, which most of us take for granted.

Those left to mourn the passing of Bob include: His wife, Judy Whiteside, of the home in Vienna; his step-son, Michael Wilkins, of Vienna; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Homer; his mother, Bess; and his sister, Gayla Sue Whiteside, at the age of 6 years.

Private interment for Mr. Bob Gene Whiteside was in the Union Hill Cemetery, near Vienna, under the direction of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna. A United States Flag was presented to Mrs. Whiteside for the honorable service of her husband in the United States Navy.

Those wishing to send a card or correspond with the family of Mr. Bob Gene Whiteside may do so in care of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 250, Vienna, Missouri 65592.
