Obituary

Christopher Adam Mitchell, of Dixon, was born on January 5, 1937, at Dixon, the son of David Christopher and Sylvia Ethel (Schofen) Mitchell, and departed this life at 9:25 a.m., on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in the St. Elizabeth Care Center, St. Elizabeth. Chris had attained the age of 77 years, 1 month, and 28 days. Chris was preceded in death by his father in 1956, and by his mother in 1999. He was a United States Army veteran having served in the years from 1960 through 1966. Chris was of the Catholic faith and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge No. 1349, Wood River, Illinois; and the National Rifle Association. Chris was an avid supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America and the Disabled American Veterans organizations. During his working life, he had been employed by the Brown Shoe Company, Dixon, and for the most part, he had been a tug boat deck hand on the Mississippi River. Those left to mourn the passing of Chris include: Cousins, other relatives, and a host of friends. Graveside funeral services, followed by military honors, were conducted for Chris at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 15, 2014, in the Mitchell Family Lot, near his parents, in the Dixon Cemetery, with Pastor Beverly Sharp officiating, under the direction of the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Honorary pallbearers for Chris will be Charles N. Sooter, Jack Davis, Dale Saunchegrow, and Henry Hauck.
