Obituary

Clement William "Clem" Schulte, of Argyle, was born on November 27, 1928, near Vienna, in Maries County, a son of Joseph Francis (Brother Arthur, O.S.B.) and Mary Margaret (Grant) Schulte, and departed this life at 10:55 p.m., on Thursday evening, March 5, 2015. Mr. Schulte had attained the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 9 days.

Mr. Schulte was united in marriage on September 1, 1956, at Wardsville, to the former Miss Ragene Ellen Winkelmann, and to this union, four children were born. He was preceded in death by his father on September 27, 1979; his mother on October 7, 1942; one brother, Edward Schulte; and one sister, Thrasilla "Patty" Schanzmeyer.

On December 6, 1950, at St. Louis, Mr. Schulte entered into active federal service in the Army of the United States and served until September 6, 1952, when he was honorably discharged at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, at the rank of Corporal. During his military career, Mr. Schulte was assigned to Company A, 361st Engineer Construction Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division and was entitled to wear the Purple Heart after being wounded in action in Korea on September 11, 1951, as well as the Korean Service Medal with one bronze star and his unit's Distinguished Unit Citation Award. A man of excellent character, Mr. Schulte's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimonial of honest and faithful service to his country during the Korean War.

He was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Argyle, charter member of the Argyle Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America Post No. 8045, the Argyle Knights of Columbus Council No. 2047, the National Association of Post Masters United States, and the Maries County Livestock Association. Mr. Schulte had been a little league baseball coach, a player and manager of the Argyle men's baseball team, and a former member of the Argyle Volunteer Fire Department. Activities he especially enjoyed included attending his grandkids sporting events; playing Pinochle; traveling with his wife; making trips to Conception Abbey; and attending the Glenn Miller Festival in Clarinda, Iowa.

During his working life, Mr. Schulte had been employed by the Schulte Feed Store, the Rock Island Railroad, and the United States Postal Service at the Argyle Post Office where he served as the Post Master from 1972 until his retirement in 1994. Also, during his entire adult life, he had an association with farming and raising livestock.

Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Schulte include: His wife of 58 years, Ragene Schulte, of the home in Argyle; his children, Brian Schulte (Suzanne) and Gretchen Berhorst (Kevin), all of Westphalia, Michael Schulte (Norma), Argyle, and Dennis Schulte, Jefferson City; nine grandchildren, Grant Schulte, Jared Schulte, Carson Schulte, Dylan Berhorst, Caitlin Berhorst, Nicholas Schulte, Evan Schulte, Grace Schulte, and Alana Schulte; one brother, Joe Schulte, Jefferson City; two sisters, Dorothy Buschjost, St. Thomas, and Marie Prater, Washington; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Ceremony was held at 7:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, March 9, 2015, in the St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Argyle, for Mr. Schulte.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Schulte was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, in the St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Argyle, with the Rev. James Finder as the Celebrant.

Interment with full military honors was in the St. Aloysius Cemetery under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Active pallbearers for Mr. Schulte were Grant Schulte, Dylan Berhorst, Nicholas Schulte, Evan Schulte, Jared Schulte, and Paul Schulte. Honorary pallbearers were Caitlin Berhorst, Grace Schulte, Alana Schulte, and Carson Schulte.
