Obituary

Gene Clay Phelps, of Vienna, was born on August 20, 1958, at St. Louis, a son of Elmer Wayne and Bertha Marie (Haynes) Phelps, and departed this life on Monday, March 3, 2014, at Freeburg. Gene had attained the age of 55 years, 6 months, and 14 days. Gene was united in marriage on April 27, 2002, at Vienna, to the former Mrs. Lisa Fay (Moss) Spencer. He was preceded in death by his father on January 12, 2000, and his mother on April 7, 2013. Gene was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 2, Kansas City; the National Rifle Association; and a former member of the American Legion. During his working life, Gene had been employed as a union sheet metal worker throughout the state of Missouri. Those left to mourn the passing of Gene include: His wife, Lisa Phelps, of Vienna; one son, Jarod Wayne Thomas Phelps, and his wife, Julie, of Jefferson City; four daughters, Jamie Malinda Hall, and her husband, Earl, of Vienna, Chastity Ann Warner, and her husband, Michael, of Jefferson City, Stacy Marie Phelps, and her husband, James Griggs, of Jefferson City, and Brandy Marie Houston, and her husband, Anthony, of Grain Valley; ten grandchildren with another one anticipated in October of 2014; one brother, David Phelps, and his wife, Patricia, of Freeburg; one sister, Karen Shanks, and her husband, Mark, of Vienna; one uncle and two aunts, Maudie and Virgil Reed, of Overland, and Fern Kuhne, of Owensville; and numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation for Gene will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., on Friday, March 14, 2014, in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Funeral services for Gene were conducted at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, March 14, 2014, in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with SFC Earl Hall officiating. Songs selected by the family for the service are "Drive", "When I Get To Where I'm Going", and "Simple Man". Private interment will be in Little Flock Cemetery, Vienna. Honorary pallbearers for Gene are Joe Backues, Billy Cloyde, Merlin Phelps, Vincent Phelps, Billy Steadman, Justin Shanks, and Joe West.
