George Earl "Sonny" Reenan, of Dixon, was born on August 30, 1924, at St. Louis, a son of George L. and Elma (Chaney) Reenan, and departed this life at 9:54 p.m., on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Rolla, following a brief illness. Mr. Reenan had attained the age of 89 years, 6 months, and 5 days. Mr. Reenan was first united in marriage on December 2, 1953, at Hillsboro, to the former Mrs. Edna Pearl (Anderson) Bell, who preceded her husband in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Thomas, James, and Robert Reenan; and one sister, Dolores Impellizzeri. Mr. Reenan was later united in marriage on December 28, 1996, at Crocker, to the former Mrs. Barbara Elsie (Woodcock) Markel. Mr. Reenan was baptized at the age of 12 years and was a member of the Lutheran faith. He was also a United States Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post, Crocker. During his working life, he was employed by the Laclede Gas Company, St. Louis, as a street supervisor for thirty-four years retiring in 1984. Mr. Reenan had lived in the Dixon area since 1996. On March 19, 1943, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, Mr. Reenan entered into active federal service in the Army of the United States and served until August 22, 1946, when he was honorably discharged at Springfield, Missouri, at the rank of Private First Class. During his military career, Mr. Reenan was assigned to Company E, 331st Infantry Regiment in the 83rd Infantry Division. He spent a couple of months experiencing constant combat and was wounded in action on January 11, 1945. During his military career, Mr. Reenan earned several awards including: The Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II. A man of excellent character, his "Honorable Discharge" is a testimonial of honest and faithful service to his country during World War II. Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Reenan include: His wife, Barbara Reenan, of the home near Dixon; one daughter, Delores Young, and her husband, Gary, of Crocker; four step-daughters, Katharyn R. Stewart, and husband, Thomas, of Iberia, Linda Glick, and her husband, Terry, of Dixon, and Kathy Lethco and Anne Lethco, both of Reno, Nevada; three step-sons, William T. Bell, and his wife, Karen, of Cuba, Irvin G. Bell, and his wife, Carol, of Iberia, and Chad Lethco, Sevierville, Tennessee; two brothers, Kenneth Reenan, SanDiego, California, and Jerry Reenan, Springfield; two sisters, Beverly Phillips and Elenore Reenan, both of St. George, Utah; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Visitation for Mr. Reenan was be from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., on Friday, March 7, 2014, and from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 8, 2014, in the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Funeral services for Mr. Reenan were conducted at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 8, 2014, in the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with the Rev. David Swetnam, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Crocker, officiating. Hymns selected by the family for the service were "The Old Rugged Cross", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", and "Beyond The Sunset". Interment with full military honors was in the Seaton Cemetery, near Dixon, under the direction of the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Pallbearers for Mr. Reenan were Gary Young, Terry Glick, Bill Bell, Steven Keeth, Timothy Keeth, and Keith Reenan. Honorary pallbearers were Steven Reenan and Wesley Glick. Memorial contributions are suggested by the family of Mr. Reenan to the Make A Wish Foundation with envelopes available at the Dixon Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
