MRS. HAZEL E. JAMES

Hazel Esther James, of Vienna, was born on April 19, 1918, near Vienna, in Maries County, a daughter of Austin Timothy and Katherine Albertine (Opperman) Terry, and departed this life at 5:13 p.m., on Wednesday evening, July 17, 2013, in Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson City. Mrs. James had attained the age of 95 years, 2 months, and 29 days.

Hazel was united in marriage on May 10, 1941, at Rolla, to Berthal Richard James, and to this union six children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 9, 2010; one infant son, Stanley Max James on June 23, 1957; one daughter, Rhonda Jan James on August 21, 1968; one grandson, Richard Horace Miller on October 1, 1994; her father on May 18, 1986; and her mother on January 25, 1987.

Hazel accepted Jesus Christ as her Personal Saviour and followed her Lord in Baptism as a teenager. She was a charter member of the Terry Baptist Church, Vienna, and at the time of her passing was a member of the First Baptist Church, Vienna.

Hazel and her husband Berthal were life-long farmers in Maries County. They worked long, hard days side by side in all aspects of their farming operations for over 50 years. During their farming years they raised cattle, hogs, chickens and turkeys. They grew corn, wheat and hay crops. They also operated two charcoal kilns for a number of years. Mrs. James enjoyed gardening, painting, bowling, quilting, and making hooked and crocheted rugs.

Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Alice James, Vienna; three daughters, Carol Miller and Elaine James, Vienna, and Doris Bates, Mexico, MO; one brother, Lloyd Terry, Vienna; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one niece; three nephews; special friends, Ken Rutter and Tony Roberts; and other relatives and friends.

After resting in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, funeral services were conducted for Mrs. James at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday morning, July 20, 2013, in the First Baptist Church, Vienna, with Rev. Mike Hurtgen officiating.

Interment was in the James Community Cemetery, Vienna, under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Pallbearers for Mrs. James were grandsons Chris James, Vaughn Barbarick, Cary Miller, and Michael Bates, and friends Ken Rutter and Tony Roberts. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Amy Wilson and Angie Volmert, great-grandson Luke Sullivan and grandson- in-law Monty Wilson.

Memorials are suggested to the James Community Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund with envelopes available at the office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, Vienna.
