Herbert Allen Salts, of Vienna, was born on July 25, 1946, in Phelps County, a son of Raymond Clarence and Clara Myrtle (Brown) Salts, and departed this life at 1:56 a.m., on Thursday, December 18, 2014, in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Rolla, of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Salts had attained the age of 68 years, 4 months, and 23 days.
Mr. Salts was united in marriage on November 11, 1967, at Vienna, to Marcella Marie Copeland, and to this union, two children were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ray Salts, Roy Salts, Robert Salts, and Donald Salts at the age of six months; two sisters, Clara Loraine Salts at the age of four days, and Alice Guederman; three brothers-in-law, Larry Akley, Jim Johnson, and Marvin Guederman; one sister-in-law, Pauline Salts; one nephew, Brian Akley; and his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Madeline Copeland.
He was baptized in 1992 and was a member of the Union Hill Baptist Church, Vienna. Mr. Salts began his working life in 1966 as a maintenance worker for Kingsford Charcoal Company, Belle, where he worked for 27 years, retiring in 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing instruments, especially his Fender Guitar.
Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Salts include: His wife, Marcella Salts, of the home near Vienna; one son, Aurther Allen Salts (Melissa), Vienna; one daughter, Leah Marie Morgan (Eric), Vienna; two grandsons, Jesse Allen Salts and Joseph Aurther Salts, both of Vienna; two brothers, Clarence Salts and Marvin Salts (Iris), all of Rolla; three sisters, Hazel Akley, Dorothy Johnson, and Ruth Gatten, all of Rolla; two sisters-in-law, Betty Salts, Newburg; and Marjorie Salts, Vienna; one brother-in-law, Joe Henry Copeland (Sharon), Florissant; nephews; nieces; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Salts at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, December 22, 2014, in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with Rev. Floyd Leimkiller, pastor of Union Hill Baptist Church officiating. Brenda Davis sang "Shall We Gather at the River", "Rock of Ages" and "Far Side Banks of Jordan", for the funeral service.
Interment was in the Union Hill Cemetery, Vienna, under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Following the pastor's committal service at the cemetery, Brenda Davis led the family and friends in the singing of "Amazing Grace" which is a Salts' family tradition at all of their special family gatherings. Active pallbearers for Mr. Salts were Rhet Akley, Patrick Akley, Louie Shanks, Bob Shanks, Joe Henry Copeland, Kenny Shockley, William Dudenhoeffer, and Eric Morgan. Honorary pallbearers were Jarrad Salts, Joseph Johnson, Jerry Gatten, Robert Johnson, David Lee Gatten, Christopher Gatten, Dennis Neese, Sr., Dennis Neese, Jr., Kenneth Murray, Carolyn Sue Murray, Colleen Waldron, Jennifer Smith, Marvin Salts, and two deceased family members--his brother-in-law, Larry Akley, and nephew, Brian Akley.
