John Joseph Schaffer, of Argyle, was born on July 17, 1936, at Iberia, a son of John Joseph and Emma Elizabeth (Bax) Schaffer, and departed this life at 3:20 p.m., on Sunday, June 7, 2020, in the Maries Manor Care Center, Vienna. He had attained the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

On November 16, 1955, at St. Louis, John entered active federal service in the Navy of the United States and served until August 15, 1957, when he was honorably discharged at San Diego, California, at the rank of SN. During his naval career, John had trained at Great Lakes, Illinois, and had proudly served aboard the USS La Moure County (LST-883), which was an LST-542-class tank landing ship named after La Moure County, North Dakota. A man of excellent character, John's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimonial of honest and faithful service to his country.

John was united in marriage on October 10, 1959, at St. Anthony, to the former Miss Patricia Osterman, and to this union, two sons were born. He was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2047, both in Argyle. During his working life, John was owner and operator of his own barber shop at Eugene, and later was a barber at the Southside Barber Shop, Jefferson City, for a total of fifty years barbering prior to his retirement. In earlier years, he attended the White School, near St. Anthony, worked hard on the family farm, worked in construction, and still enjoyed wood working as well as a good game of cards, fishing, hunting, and his Beagle Dogs.
