"Kathy" Katherine Mae Irene Smith, of Dixon, was born on July 21, 1951, at Sioux City, Iowa, a daughter of Melvin Ivan and Delores Pearl (VaNornon) Handke, and departed this life at 1:02 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at her residence with her husband by her side. Kathy had attained the age of 66 years, 7 months, and 7 days.
Kathy was united in marriage on July 10, 1970, at Fort Leonard Wood, to Raymond Eugene Smith, and to this union, one son was born. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin; and one brother, Burton Handke.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.3168, Buckhorn, where she was a past president, secretary, treasurer, and the chairperson of the Bingo program. Kathy had been a bookkeeper for the Laquey R-4 School System retiring after twenty years of service, she enjoyed fishing, and genealogy, as well as being a devoted housewife and homemaker, always diligent in providing for the needs of her family.
Those left to mourn the passing of Kathy include; her husband of forty-eight years, Ray Smith of the home in Dixon; one son, Gene Smith, Indianapolis, Indiana; two grandchildren, Jessica Smith and Austin Runyon; her mother, Delores Handke, Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers, Rick Handke, Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Randy Handke, Evansville, Indiana; two sisters, Pat Oehlerking, Lawton, Iowa, and Julie Castle, Sioux City, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Kathy will indeed be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
