Larry Joseph Eberle Sr., age 82, of Dixon, was born November 19, 1940, in St. Mary's Hospital, East St. Louis, Illinois, a son of Lorrain and Gladys (Sudheiner) Eberle, and passed from this life Wednesday, February 8, 2023, in Phelps Health Hospital, Rolla.
Larry entered active federal service in the United States Marines on January 16, 1958 at McAlester, Oklahoma, and served until January 15, 1962, when he was honorably discharged, at the rank of Lance Corporal. During his time in the United States Marines LCpl Eberle was honored to serve as a Presidential guard for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and was entitled to wear the Good Conduct Medal. A man of excellent character, Larry's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimony of selfless and faithful service to his country.
He was united in marriage December 2, 1961, in McAlester, Oklahoma, to Wanda June Buff, who preceded him in death on January 7, 2019, and to this union five sons were born.
Larry attended St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dixon, and was a member of the St. Robert American Legion. In his spare time, Larry enjoyed building 3D birdhouses and riding his big white Harley Davidson motorcycle.
During his working life Larry was an over the road truck driver for 55 years for various companies including Quaker Windows and Doors, Freeburg.
Those left to mourn the passing of Larry include: two sons, Larry Joseph Eberle, Jr., of McLoud, Oklahoma, and Matthew Shane Eberle, of Dixon; three brothers, Pete Eberle, John Eberle, and Jimmy Eberle; one sister, Mary; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sons, Michael Daniel Eberle, and two infant sons; his father Lorrain; his mother, Gladys; two daughters-in-law, Beatrice "B" Eberle and Joann Eberle; two brothers, Frank Eberle and Gene Eberle; and one sister Joyce Eberle.
Visitation for Larry will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2023, in the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home Chapel, 105 E. Third Street, Dixon, Mo, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m., and Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with his funeral service following at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend William L. Korte officiating.
Interment with full military honors will be by his loving wife of 57 years in St. Theresa Cemetery, near Dixon, under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon. Active pallbearers for Larry Eberle will be Matthew Eberle, Larry Eberle Jr., Michael Wagoner, Dan Gann, Pete Eberle, and Jimmy Parker. Honorary pallbearers will be Heather Wagoner, Jim Humphrey, and Alfred Doba.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Larry Eberle, Sr. are suggested per the wishes of the family with envelopes available at the Dixon Funeral Home or in care of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box EE, Dixon, Mo, 65459.
