Leona "Lee" M. Spiering, nee Zimmer, age 75, of Vienna, Missouri, passed away on March 14, 2016, after a courageous battle against cancer. Lee is survived by three children: Patrick Spiering married to Sandra Spiering, of Saint Joseph, Michigan; Barbara (Spiering) married to Tadd Carroll, of Seattle, Washington; and Carolyn Anderson (Spiering) married to Larry Anderson, of Mount Vernon, Washington. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Ian, Gabriella, Joshua, Ronan and Kilian.
Lee was born in Vienna, Missouri on March 23, 1940 along with her twin sister Leavera, to Margaret and Henry Zimmer. Lee was preceded in death by her father, Henry on May 7, 1983; her mother, Margaret on July 23, 2002; and one nephew, Michael Ragan. As a child she and her family moved to St. Louis, but she still spent many days at her grandparent's farm in Brinktown. After graduating high school in 1958, she was drawn into the nursing field and graduated from the DePaul School of Nursing in 1961. While serving as a nurse in Denver, Colorado, she met her future husband. Lee and Robert were married from 1965 to 1996.
The next 29 years were spent in Washington State, raising a family and working as an Emergency Room RN. She held positions at Deaconess, Mid-Valley and Island Hospitals. She ended her 35+ years of nursing back home where it all started, DePaul Hospital.
In 2005 Lee moved back to Vienna to live closer to her sister. She started volunteering at the school library at the Visitation Catholic Church and loved the children she met there. She spent many hours volunteering at the church as well. She spent her retirement years playing cards with friends, reading and catching up on her genealogy. But her greatest passion was her family.
Others left to mourn the passing of Lee include: Her twin sister and her husband, Leavera and Russell Ragan, Vienna; one sister-in-law and her husband, Sandy and J.D. Bruce, Lincoln, California; two nephews; three nieces; and many other relatives and friends.
