Leslie F. Volmert, 88, entered into his eternal life December 27, 2014, peacefully at his ranch in Vienna Missouri, surrounded by his loving nephews.
He was born on September 9, 1926, in Vienna, Mo, the son of John I Volmert and Bertha C (Stratman) Volmert, both of whom preceded him in death, as well as, one sister, Polly A. (Volmert) Pecher; one brother, Richard L. Volmert; and one nephew Kenneth G. Volmert.
He attended grade school at Visitation Catholic School. Les was a graduate of Vienna High School and a 1950 graduate and proud alumnus of the University of Missouri Columbia. He spent his career as a Soil Conservationist with the Us Department of agriculture, in New Madrid and St. Charles, Missouri. A WWII veteran, Les proudly served in the US Navy aboard the USS Stickell. He served in the US Army reserve attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. A devote catholic, he was a member of Visitation Parish in Vienna, Mo. Les served as substitute teacher with Vienna Public Schools.
A dedicated community activist, Leslie was a founding member of The Vienna Lions Club; an active member of the Knights of Columbus Visitation Council No. 13178, Vienna; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8045, Argyle; the Coffee Brothers Memorial American Legion Post No. 12, Vienna; the Missouri Cattlemen's Association; Optimist Club; Rotary Club and the Missouri Farm Bureau.
A lifelong farmer, he was the proud proprietor of his Century Farm. He raised registered polled Hereford cattle and was a member of the Missouri Polled Hereford Association, serving as a past president. He was on the board of the MO Cattleman's Association. Throughout his career and retirement he was a member of the Soil Conservation Society of America, and was awarded the 1965 Soil Conservation Award by the Conservation Federation of Missouri in cooperation with The National Wildlife Federation and the Sears-Roebuck Foundation. He loved hunting especially quail hunting with his father, brother and friends. He was an avid fisherman. Les had a passion for photography. He had a love for politics and civic responsibility and was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. In 2009 - he was a proud participant in the WWII Honor Flight to Washington DC and regarded the event as one the greatest experiences of his life.
He was deeply loved and cherished by those who survive him in death. His loving sister-in-law Agnes A. Volmert , and his beloved nieces and nephews; niece Lori Wolken, California, Mo.; nephew Ed Pecher, Vienna Mo; nephew John Pecher, niece, Gina Volmert, nephew Keith (Penny) Pecher, nephew Jeff Volmert, nephew Roger (Melissa)Pecher, all of Jefferson City, Brad (Khonsavan) Volmert Columbia, Mo., as well as six great-nieces and six great-nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mr. Volmert at 11:00 a.m., Saturday morning, January 3, 2015, in the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna, with the Rev. Matthew Flatley, celebreating. Interment will be in the Visitation Cemetery, Vienna, under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2015, with a VFW service at 7 p.m. followed by a Prayer Service in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, and 10 – 11 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2015, in the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna.
