Marjorie Lee
Holman
Jul 10, 1923 — Feb 23, 2021
Our beloved mother, Marjorie Lee Wood Holman, was born in Huntington Park, CA, on July 10, 1923, and passed away on February 23, 2021, at age 97. She was the only child of Elbert R. Wood of Oklahoma and Hazel B. (Foster) Wood of Iowa and Oklahoma. In her early years, Margie and her parents lived in California when the state was dotted by wild poppies and citrus groves and the air was redolent of eucalyptus trees and manzanita bushes. When the Depression hit hardest, the little family moved to Wichita, KS, where Margie graduated from East High School in 1940. In the early days of World War II, she attended the University of Wichita and Friends University where she enjoyed music, theater, and dance, and joined Delta Rho Alpha Nu sorority. She moved to Oklahoma City after six weeks of her junior year to go to work for the war effort.
It was there at Douglas Aircraft that she met her future husband, Raymond W. Holman of Vienna, MO, (son of Tom D. Holman and Ann (Shockley) Holman). After dating several months, the couple became engaged and married in Wichita on March 5, 1944. They enjoyed three months of married life before Ray was called to active duty. It was not until 1946 that they were able to settle and begin their life together after Ray's combat service in the Pacific. They lived in many places as Ray's schooling and jobs in business and the aircraft industry took them to Dallas, Wichita, Denver, Salt Lake City, southern California, and Washington state. Along the way they welcomed four children into their lives. In retirement Margie and Ray spent time in Missouri, Arizona, Idaho, Oklahoma, and Denver as they followed their interests and children around the country. Margie continued the pattern of moves after Ray's passing in 2001, living in Northglenn and Ft. Collins, CO, Seaside, CA, and Dallas, TX.
Margie was much loved by her daughters and sons, by grands and great-grands, and by numerous friends in many places. In her years as a mother, she was devoted to her family. In retirement, she spent much of her time feeding her mind and doing things she loved. She had a lively and inquiring intellect and loved nothing better than tuning in to news and interview programs on TV and reading books, newsletters, newspapers and magazines. She also enjoyed old movies, working crossword and Sudoku puzzles, playing the piano and the flute, composing music, and singing and directing choirs. She was an avid e-mailer with her many friends. She kept up with childhood and college friends throughout her life, calling and visiting them in person whenever she could, and making new, younger friends as she outlived former ones.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by: Daughters, Jeanette Cumming and husband, Steve, of Dallas, TX, and Barbara Baker and husband, Kent, of Salt Lake City, UT, and sons Raymond W. Holman, Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Commerce City, CO and Donald W. Holman and wife, Caroline, of Ft. Collins, CO. Grand-children and great-grandchildren include: Phillip Cumming and wife, Suzi, and Zack and Claire; Jon Baker and wife, Katherine, Noah and Emma; Spencer Baker and son Dastin; Andy Baker and wife, Rubie; Ryan Holman and sons and daughter, Riley, Melanie, and Gavin; Megan and Whitney Holman; David Holman and wife, Brenda; Ben, Max and Thomas Holman; and cousins in California, Idaho, and Oregon, and nieces and nephews by marriage in California and Missouri.
Margie will be interred with her beloved husband, Ray, in Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, under the direction of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna, Missouri.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Marjorie L. Holman are suggested by her family to the Rader United Methodist Church or the Rader Cemetery, Vienna, Missouri, in care of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 250, Vienna, Missouri 65582.
