Mary Ellen Porter, of Dixon, was born September 24, 1927, in Miller County, a daughter of Vasca Venus and Phoebe Elizabeth (Rowden) Slone, and passed from this life Wednesday, July 20, 2022, in Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center, Tuscumbia, MO. Mary had attained the age of 94 years, 9 months, and 26 days
Mary was united in marriage April 13, 1946, at Harrison, Arkansas, to Norman Porter, and to this union, three children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, on August 21, 2016, her mother, father, and siblings.
Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church, Dixon, and served as a Sunday School teacher of the Mary & Martha Sunday School Class. She also taught many junior classes prior to becoming part of the Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing and playing piano by ear. Mary sang in a trio with the late Opal Shepard and Audrey Simpson and also sang solo at different events. She loved gospel music and attended as many 'gospel sings' as possible. Mary enjoyed being a homemaker, sewing, crocheting, and cooking. She enjoyed playing golf, reading the Bible, Christian literature, and psychology books. Mary enjoyed road trips with Norman and taking in the sights, but she loved getting back home.
Those left to celebrate the life of Mary are her children: Troy and Barbara Porter, Dixon; Trent and Darla Porter, Jefferson City; Charlotte and Jim Divincen, Osage Beach; ten grandchildren, Travis (Shelley) Porter, Shawnee, Kansas; Shawn Porter, Dixon; Brett (Niki) Porter, Lenexa, Kansas; Jeffrey (Jenny) Davidson, Jefferson City; Tiffany (Clint) Cox, Fulton; Aaron (Annie) Davidson, Chicago; Matt Lewis, Kansas City; Christy (T.J.) Kitchen, Houston; Melissa (Jesse) Zeugin, St. Louis; and Kelli (Jed) Foreman, Des Moines; nineteen great grandchildren, Wyatt, Montana and Hope, Abigail, Emmeline, Tristan, Grayson, Sven, Monroe, Sophia, Rhys, Bennett, Micah, Libby, Elliot, Teddy, Jace, Brooklyn, and Gus; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation for Mary Ellen Porter will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 23, 2022, First Baptist Church, 400 West 4 th Street, Dixon, MO 65459, with her funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Church with Pastor Jack Caple officiating, under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon.
Interment will be next to her husband, Norman, in Dixon Cemetery, Dixon, with Wyatt Porter, Montana Porter, Travis Porter, Shawn Porter, Clint Cox, and Jeff Davidson serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers for Mary are Brett Porter, Matt Lewis, Aaron Davidson, T.J. Kitchen, Christy Kitchen, and Tiffany Cox.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Mary Ellen Porter are suggested per the wishes of the family to First Baptist Church or Seaton Faith Fellowship Church, both of Dixon, with envelopes available the day of service at the church or in care of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box EE, Dixon, MO 65459.
