Obituary

A descendant of some of the original settlers of Maries County has died the triumphant death of a Christian, rejoicing in full hope of a higher life.  Mary June Powell, of Kansas City, formerly of Dixon, Jefferson City, and Riverside, California, was born April 17, 1923, in the City of St. Louis, the only daughter of Frank Guy and Eliza Obedience "Bedie" (Davis) Schneider (Bedie was named after her grandmother, Naomi Obedience (Fleming) Johnson Parker.), and passed from this life Wednesday, September 1, 2021, in Truman Lakewood, Kansas City.  Mrs. Powell had attained the age of 98 years, 4 months, and 14 days.

Mary June was united in marriage October 27, 1967, at Jefferson City, to Charles Forrest Powell, who preceded his wife in death August 16, 1998.  Forrest was born March 13, 1913, at Edina, MO, where he grew up and attended school as well.

Mrs. Powell had accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early in her life and followed her Blessed Redeemer in baptism.  She was currently a member of the Gathering Baptist Church, Independence, MO, and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Mary June especially enjoyed creating beautiful items by sewing and doing other various types of crafts.

While living in Jefferson City, Mrs. Powell had been employed by City National Savings and Loan as a bookkeeper for fifteen years, prior to she and her husband moving to the state of California in 1975.  After the death of her husband, Mary June moved back to Kansas City, MO, in 2000.

Mrs. Powell was known to have one step-daughter, Anita Millhillan, of Riverside, California; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; dearest friend, Naomi Baur Eads, Independence (formerly of Dixon); her church deacon, Ken Bledsoe, and his family, Independence; a host of Davis, Bassett, Nelson, Martin, and Johnson cousins; and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Mary June was preceded in death by her father, Frank, January 11, 1888 - December 13, 1946; her mother, Bedie, November 2, 1892 - June 17, 1960; her maternal aunts, Iva Davis, February 24, 1894 – November 16, 1950, and Gladys (Davis) Glenn and her husband, Dr. W.L. Glenn; her maternal grandfather, Perry Edwin Davis, August 6, 1871 – December 31, 1936; maternal grandmother, Mary Emma (Johnson) Davis, 1873 – 1946; maternal great-grandfather, Monroe Johnson, August 31, 1847 – January 16, 1892; maternal great-grandmother, Naomi Obedience (Fleming) Johnson Parker, April 16, 1851 – February 3, 1933; (Monroe and Naomi married November 24, 1870, to this union eight children were born); maternal great-great-grandparents, Abraham John  and Emmeline (Avery) Johnson (Abraham was born in St. Louis County in 1817, and died March 21, 1890, at the age of 73 years, 2 months, and 3 days.  He married Emmeline Avery in 1841, to this union, one son, Monroe, was born to whom Abraham deeded Clifty Dale, the upper end of the four miles of  Gasconade riverfront owned by him.  Emmeline died October 21, 1851, at the age of 29 years, 10 months, and 10 days.  Dr. Avery Johnson, Doctor of Dental Surgery, career dentist in St. Louis and Dixon, was named after his grandmother by using her maiden name); maternal great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Johnson; and many more to be remembered.

Visitation for Mrs. Mary June Powell will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, 2021, in the Dixon Cemetery, West Chestnut Street, Dixon, MO 65459, with her graveside funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Francis O'Connell, Gathering Baptist Church, Independence, officiating.

Inurnment will follow next to her beloved husband, her parents, and other relatives in the Dixon Cemetery.  Honorary pallbearers for Mrs. Powell will be her third cousins and grandsons of her great-uncle and aunt, Elmer Franklin Bassett, January 24, 1883 – April 4, 1953, and Cora Ellen (Johnson) Bassett, February 20, 1895 – August 1, 1955: Paul Nelson, Arthur Ray Bassett, Donald Bassett, Robert Bassett, Fred Bassett, Charles Bassett, David Martin, and cousin, Quentin Davis.

Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Mary June Powell are suggested to the Dixon Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund with envelopes available at her service or in  care of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box EE, Dixon, MO 65459.
