Robert Eugene Bassett, age 82, of Columbia, was born February 6, 1940, near Dixon, in Maries County, the son of Clyde Elmer and Neva Faye (Doyel) Bassett, and passed from this life Monday, May 16, 2022, at his residence in Columbia.
On September 28, 1959, at St. Louis, Bob entered active federal service in the United States Air Force and served until March 17, 1964, when he was honorably discharged at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, at the rank of Airman First Class E-4. A man of excellent character, Bob's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimony of selfless and faithful service to his country.
He was united in marriage June 18, 1983, at Columbia, to Patricia Lee Hackler.
Growing up on farms in Maries County, Bob knew all about hard work and could do just about anything that needed to be done. He received his elementary education in Maries County, was a high school graduate, and completed two years of college. Bob made a profession of faith and was baptized while attending Kenner Church of God, near Dixon, with his family.
During his working life, Bob specialized in home building and was owner and operator of Bassett Construction Company, Columbia, for thirty years, retiring in 2004.
Those left to mourn the passing of Bob include: His wife, Pat, of Columbia; one son, Robert Bassett and wife, Cathy, of Fulton; two daughters, Sandra Lapsley and husband, Tim, of Columbia, and Teresa Dilger and husband, Dan, of Pleasanton, California; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth Bassett, and wife, Susan, of St. Robert; one sister, Marilyn Davis, and husband, Marty, of Rolla; three sisters-in-law, Leila Bassett of Lincoln, Nebraska, Donna Bassett of Dixon, and Marilyn Bassett of Vienna; nephews, nieces, with greats and great-greats as well; cousins; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Faye Bassett; three brothers, Willis Bassett, Arnold Bassett, and Roy Bassett; and one grandson, Micah Babick.
Visitation for Mr. Robert E. Bassett will be held from 10am until 12pm, Saturday, May 21, 2022, in Kenner Church of God, 17996 Maries Road 505, Dixon, MO 65459 with his funeral service following at 12pm in the church with Rev. Beverly Sharp officiating. Interment with full military honors will be after the service in Kenner Cemetery under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Robert E. Bassett are suggested by his family to the Kenner Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund or the Central Missouri Food Bank with envelopes available at church day of service or in care of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box EE, Dixon, MO 65459.
