Sylvester Joseph "Vess" Lock, age 83, of Jefferson City, was born July 21, 1941, at Jefferson City, Missouri, a son of Lawrence Matthew and Bernadine (Meyer) Lock, and passed from this life on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at StoneBridge Senior Living-Villa Marie, Jefferson City.

He was united in marriage August 1, 1964, at Argyle, to the former Miss Helen Marie Steinman, and to this union, three children were born.

Vess was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jefferson City, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693, Jefferson City.

During his working life, Vess was employed at the Missouri State Penitentiary, Jefferson City, as a corrections officer until he retired after 20 years. In his free time, he enjoyed watching sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. In his younger years, Vess started a band, and could play anything that could be hummed, he often played at funerals as well, but one of his greatest joys was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Those left to celebrate the life of Vess include:  His loving wife of sixty year, Helen, of their home in Jefferson City; two daughters, Lisa Ann Lock of Jefferson City, and Micelle Lynn "Shelle" Jacobs and husband, Steve, of Koeltztown; two grandchildren, Cody Jacobs and Alex Jacobs; one sister, Irene Schoenen of Jefferson City; nephews; nieces; other relatives; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Lock on November 6, 1990; his father, Lawrence on February 8, 1972; his mother, Bernadine on March 24, 1955; six siblings, Wilfred Lock on March 8, 1973, Jody Fisher on September 25, 2002, Viola Vivion on March 27, 2009, David Lock on December 19, 2009, Mary Ann Fitzpatrick on February 6, 2017, and Alice Daniels on February 4, 2020.

Visitation for Mr. Vess Lock will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary following at 7:00 p.m., Sunday August 11, 2024, in the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home Chapel, 406 S. Main Street, Vienna, MO 65582, and his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 12, 2024, in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, One Church Lane, Argyle, Mo 65001, with Rev. Basil Tigga as the celebrant and Deacon Michael Brooks assisting, under the direction of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna.

Interment for Vess will be in the St. Aloysius Cemetery, Argyle.  Pallbearers will be Cody Jacobs, Alex Jacobs, Curtis Weavers, Roger Fitzpatrick, Craig Fitzpatrick, and Richard Lock. Honorary pallbearer for Vess Lock will be Jerry Lock.
